9.6.2005
Instead of box 6 we are now monitoring box 2 with great tits. Happened so far:
Great tit box2
01.05.2005 Nesting began.
14.05.2005 5 eggs
14.05.2005 6 eggs
15.05.2005 7 eggs
27.05.2005 6 eggs hatched, one unhatched
There are now five chicks left and they are all looking good.
Blue tit looking in box 6 wich is now empty. Is this one of those birds whos nesting yesterday failed?
7.6.2005
Neting of blue tit in box 6 totally failed. The last chick died during the evening.

The female abandoned the nest at 9:21pm.

The nest was remowed three hours after it was abandoned.
There was a bad smell in the box. There were three dead chicks and an broken unhatched egg in the nest. All blakc dots in the picture are some buggs.

The last chick looks not wery good.
It is now delivered to The National Veterinary and Food Research Institute of Finland for further study to find the cause of death.

Great tit chicks are continuing to grow well.

They are already looking like small birds instead of chicks. They woice can already be heared outside of the box.

The bad luck for the blue tits in box 6 are continuing. Now only one chick left. It looks very small also compared to the great tit chicks wich hatched at the same day.

4.6.2005
Great tits in box 1 are ok. Four chicks are alive from five eggs.
Both parents are feeding.

Chicks are growing ok. Thy are also starting to move out of the nest cup.
A wery rainy evening. The female is totally wet when entering ht e box in the box.

Blue tits in box 6 has only two chicks left from 10 eggs. Reason for the death of the other chicks is unknown.

Blue tits can grow a brood of 12 chicks. With only two chicks there should be plenty of food available.

The chicks are growing and mowing. Soon they will jump out from the nest cup.

Wet looking is also the blue tit.
